Summer Seminar with Guro Ray Parra |
On August 11th, 2012, the Athens Dojo was the proud host of a Kali and Silat seminar instructed by Guro Ray Parra of Parra’s Academy of Martial Arts located in Austin, TX. Guro Parra was accompanied by one of his students, Mr. Anthony Serino of Austin. I have been training with Guro Parra for the past year and a half or so in his style of Kali-Silat-Jeet Kune Do to continue the training I received many years ago from Sifu Larry Hartsell. Guro Parra holds instructor certifications under Sifu Hartsell as well as Guro Dan Inosanto and others. Guro Parra is an excellent and very knowledgeable instructor and delivered solidly on this with the seminar in Athens. We worked for three and a half hours beginning with some Silat leg drills and moving on to the single stick, double stick, dagger and empty hand drills of Kali. One of the points of the seminar was how these all relate to each other in Kali and a number of drills were used to illustrate this. One major point of emphasis was on footwork and the proper manipulation of the sticks and daggers. For those of you who may not be aware of it, the six direction stepping we did at the tuite camp last year came from Guro Parra’s Kali drills. The three and a half hours of the seminar passed quickly and all of the 15 or so participants enjoyed it a great deal. I know I did! There will be more of these types of seminars with Guro Parra in the future and I look forward to seeing many of you there. I want to send a special thanks to Guro Parra and Tony for all their help and training during the seminar. It is most appreciated and greatly enjoyed. Good luck and good training! John
